What studying Nursing is really like: A Graduate’s story.
Jillian Turns Graduated in 2010 as a qualified nurse and is currently working in Kettering General Hospital. Here is her story about her time as a student nurse at The University of Northampton:
I was originally a hairdresser, but really wanted to become a nurse, as I always wanted a good education a fulfilling career. My mum does cancer research, so I had been listening to her stories of medical nursing from a young age.
At first I didn’t want to copy my mum — hence hairdressing. Eventually I craved to do something I could be truly proud of and which was different each day, so I decided to study Nursing at the University of Northampton.
I really enjoyed the Pathophysiology aspects of the course and, if I remember correctly, it was the 3rd year of patho which really helped relate the science to the medical illnesses whilst on placement.
I also made use of the Centre for Achievement and Performance. They were extremely helpful, particularly from a referencing point of view.
My personal tutor was Jacquie Ridge, she was exceptionally supportive throughout my time on the course. Pam Roke, who is now retired, was also an amazing support when I qualified and became a mentor myself. She helped me through a difficult time when I had to fail a student.
I have recently been seconded to be a Lead Nurse for urgent care at Kettering General Hospital and now oversee MAU, ACU and Clifford Ward. KGH has given me fantastic opportunities and has believed in me, assisting in my career development, for which I am extremely grateful.
