Here’s how UoN social team staffers each celebrate Christmas in their own weird and wonderful ways

I spend Christmas Eve with my boyfriend and his family. His childhood Christmas Eve tradition was going to the cinema in the evening (to calm him and his brother down before Father Christmas arrived, I think), but it’s now become a regular tradition. This year we’re seeing the new Star Wars (SO EXCITED).

Matthew
I always woke up super early at Christmas, then woke everyone else up to open our presents from ‘Santa’ on my parents’ bed. They always said if we didn’t believe in Santa he would stop coming. We had to pretend that we didn’t know that they had got us the presents, even though they were conveniently things that we needed around the house like toothpaste, shampoo and socks!

Denise
I cook a huge dinner for friends on Christmas Eve, usually a whole salmon, a vegetarian meal and roast meat, roast and mash potatoes, carrots, roasted parsnips, Brussels sprouts, peas and two lots of gravy. I make different types of desserts, one chocolate, non-chocolate and a cheese board, plus lots and lots and lots of wine, port and beer.

Anthony
We’ve recently started playing Just Dance every Christmas. We always finish on a Disney movie and the Eastenders Special where I’m constantly asking ‘who is that?’, ‘why is Sharon still in it?’ etc… because it’s the only time of year I watch it.

Kylie
My new tradition is to go for a Christmas day walk with my dog and my friend and her dog, John the pug. Then we have a glass of Buck’s Fizz before we do ‘family’ stuff.

Although these traditions don’t happen every year for me, I still love them and can’t wait to start my own traditions with my little family next year.

Sarah

On Christmas Eve, we always eat top quality steak and chips for dinner. On Christmas day, we Skype the family who I’m not with, always, and we book it in advance and time it!

Ellie
My mum and I ALWAYS watch Love Actually and have a glass of wine on Christmas Eve. When I was younger I received a toy ghost (called “Boo”) from visiting a Santa’s Grotto, who has become a tree decoration every year even though he’s covered in old gravy stains.

Tess
We arrange for Santa to leave snowy footprints round the fireplace late at night on Christmas Eve.

A large pair of shoes and some flour have, on occasion, been spotted round the house on Christmas morning. But we’re sure this has nothing to do with Santa’s footprints.

Tess’s dog feeling festive with a bottle of Prosecco (it’s a squeaky toy!)

Amy
My twins each have a Christmas Eve box which includes Christmas PJ’s, chocolate coins, a Christmas tree decoration and either a DVD or Christmas colouring book/story book. We put out 2 plates for Santa and all his reindeer — he has milk on one and rum on the other (we like Santa to have a choice).

Nick
When the Coca-Cola truck advert appears on TV, all of my family will text each other once we’ve seen it, like it’s the Beacons of Gondor.

Christmas Day evening, we have the annual debate about what board game to play (it’s always Balderdash) and eventually we end up in the lounge watching Peter Kay.
