The Life of a Paramedic Student in Northampton
University of Northampton Paramedic Science Student Lucas Horton aspires to become a critical care paramedic eventually from the dizzy heights of the air ambulance.
“The University of Northampton’s Paramedic Science course has a really strong reputation. The course here covers the academic content such as medical law, anatomy and biology, alongside the communication skills needed for the role, all the while backed up by practical experience through regular clinical placements and shift work.”
His advice for students considering studying to be a paramedic is: “Try to get as much experience as possible in Health Care; I think it really helped me get on to the course. Research in to what is like to be a Paramedic is also really important, it’s not all about blue lights, you often see some very poorly people and you have to be able to help them when they need it most.”
Just eight weeks into his course, Lucas found himself undertaking his first clinical placement with the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS); this set his mind firmly on giving much needed critical care to those patients who need it most.
