Student Finance for Clearing
Funding your studies is a big part of the preparation you must go through before getting to university. If you get your place through clearing, there won’t be long between getting your place and starting, so you’ll need to move quickly to get things sorted.
There are two different kinds of student who get places in clearing, new applicants who only recently decided to make an application, and those who were unsuccessful or chose to decline their original application to other institutions who then came to Northampton and were offered a place. The process is slightly different depending on how you got your place.
The process is also different for EU students, who should skip to the bottom of this page. International Students normally apply using a different system, so for information about fees and funding for you please visit our website or contact the international office on international@northampton.ac.uk.
New Applicants
For the first group, those who haven’t applied for finance at all yet, the deadlines for the start of term are long past. However don’t panic, if you start an application as soon as you know that you’re coming here, the Student Loans Company will endeavor to get you some money as soon as possible with an initial, quick assessment, though the full assessment can take up to six weeks, and they don’t guarantee that you’ll have the money for the start of term. The university would obviously prefer that students have a completed Finance application when they start but we understand that if you get your place through Clearing this won’t be possible, so as long as you can provide evidence that you’ve started the application, you should be fine.
You’ll need to make sure you send back the signed declaration or Student Finance won’t be able to pay you anything.
Depending on where you live, the provider to use is different:
- England — Student Finance England
- Northern Ireland — Student Finance NI
- Scotland — Student Awards Agency for Scotland
- Wales — Student Finance Wales
Existing Applicants
For the second set of people, you’ll just need to log in to the loan provider that you originally applied for finance with and change your details. You’ll need to do this as soon as your place is confirmed so that everything can be sorted out in time for the start of term. You should log in to the same account that you used originally, so depending on where you live:
- England — Student Finance England
- Northern Ireland — Student Finance NI
- Scotland — Student Awards Agency for Scotland
- Wales — Student Finance Wales
The only other thing for you to do then will be to register with the University at Welcome Weekend. Once you’ve done this, your payments should start within three working days.
EU Students
EU students who haven’t been residing in the UK in the last three years may be able to get a Tuition Fee Loan. These applications can take six weeks to process. Please visit this page for more details and to download the form.
