Shaping the Future: Teaching Black History in Northamptonshire
We spoke to Paul, Senior Lecturer in Education / Curriculum Leader for History in Initial Teacher Education, about his contribution to a research project looking at teaching black history in Northamptonshire primary schools.
The paper, available here, looks at the reaction to a number of packs that were created highlighting different case studies within black history in the UK and specifically Northamptonshire. These included packs about Walter Tull and an immigrant family in World War II. Some of these resources are available for teachers here: https://www.northamptonshireblackhistory.com/education
In this interview, Paul talks about the research, the reaction to the research, and the need to shift our perspective when teaching history in primary schools, away from a narrow, white-centered lens and towards a holistic perspective. In this way, we can both include more voices of colour in our narratives and teach a better, more accurate picture of the past.
