My Mental Health Nursing Journey | Torsby
MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH) graduate Torsby shares his journey to becoming a mental health nurse.
In my quest to undertake my Master's programme, the University of Northampton stood out as place that would give me the high-quality of teaching I needed. This was also backed up by their Gold standard awarded by the Government in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). My initial visit to the University of Northampton and reading reviews showed that it was a place that promoted equal opportunities to students from various walks of life. Again, during my preliminary enquiries, I received help, support and prompt replies.
As I developed my interest in the Health and Social Care sector, I became interested in Mental Health. CAMH became a more appealing area for me as I am of the view that supporting children and young people early in life would help mitigate their mental health issues from deteriorating as they grow into adulthood. With the current high rate of knife crime among young people in England, I am glad I did this course as my knowledge and skills will be very beneficial in helping these young people suffering from abuse, identity crises and lack of support and guidance.

The course had very good practical skills around working with children and young people, the families, and working with schools and the community. The role-plays and activities were highlights for me because they equipped me with the skills and knowledge on how to deal with children and young people. Some of the core skills I gained included communication, observation, collaboration, research and case formulation which have helped me to work with young people and other professionals.
The lecturers were very helpful, available and supported me throughout the course which has given me a greater understanding of mental health issues that affect young people. This knowledge has helped put me on a career path to becoming a mental health nurse.
Since completing the course, I have decided to learn more about Mental Health and am currently enrolled on a postgraduate mental health nursing course so I can qualify as a mental health nurse.
