Media and Journalism at UON
Hilary Scott looks at the fantastic things that journalism students have been up to this year.
My name is Hilary Scott and I look after the media and journalism courses at the University of Northampton.
We hope you are well and managing your studies during this difficult time, and we are sorry we are unable to see you face to face at the moment due to the lockdown. It is incredibly important that journalism is taught to a high standard, especially at times like these when accurate information is crucial to the wellbeing of the public, which is why you can be assured that as BJTC accredited courses, you are getting taught to the highest standards approved by major media groups and broadcasters. All our tutors are current or former journalists and we teach both practical and academic skills to help you become a skilled communicator.

What you can do when studying BA Multimedia Journalism and BA Multimedia Sports Journalism at the University of Northampton?
Trip to Berlin, Germany, for 2nd and 3rd yrs BA Multimedia Journalism and BA Multimedia Sports Journalism, 7–11th November 2019
Purpose: To report the celebrations around the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, report the Cities for Europe conference and to cover a major Hertha B.S.C football match. Students did live reports for BBC Radio Northampton and NLive Radio. See how they got on here:

General Election Night 12–13th December 2019: Students from all year groups on BA Multimedia Journalism, BA Multimedia Sports Journalism and our joint honours courses reported the results of the General Election, broadcasting live overnight from NLive Radio, from 10pm-6am. Students worked as presenters, producers, bulletin readers, editors, and as reporters at the counts.
The University’s journalism department also led the UK wide collaboration of journalism students covering the results, through the Broadcast Journalism Training Council. Our NLive programme became the BJTC official election night programme, with students from 25 other universities reporting alongside our own students. Watch our students in action here:

Meet our award winning students
We are very proud that BA Multimedia Journalism student Kirk Asiedu won not just Best Radio Documentary but the Steve Harris Prize for Overall Excellence in Journalism at the Broadcast Journalism Training Council’s annual awards in November 2019. The BJTC awards are the biggest national awards for students journalists in the UK. Kirk’s award winning entry was a documentary comparing care for dementia in the UK with that in Ghana. He now works at both LBC and at Associated Press.

Meanwhile Kirk’s classmates were scooping up awards at the Midland Media Student Awards. Kaylee is now working for the BBC, Sam is working for BT Sport and Ama is in public relations. We are proud of them all.
