Junior Paramedics — Where are they now? Lucy Wright
In 2014 BBC Three followed 14 of our paramedic students in the documentary ‘Junior Paramedics’.
Two years later all of the students have graduated and are now in full time employment with EMAS*. So many of you want to know what they are up to now, so we got in touch with Lucy Wright to ask her to give us an update.
Lucy Wright:
I always knew I wanted to be a paramedic or a midwife, working in an emergency setting suits me; I constantly like to be on the move and I love the rush. I wanted a career I knew combined all of my interests.
As a paramedic I am responsible for the care of my patients, and need to ensure they receive the right outcome to my call to them. This also includes being responsible for drugs, documentation and life saving interventions.
Having been given such a focus on practical application of the knowledge at university and going out on placements, meant I knew what to expect when I started working and I was well prepared. The way the course was structured meant that the basics of the job feels like second nature now as I had so much exposure to the work setting.
I love that every day it’s my job to meet new people, it can be challenging, but the adrenaline rush keeps me going! I am a self-confessed adrenaline junkie and this job combines that and my love for driving. Of course it’s not always a rush and it is nice just to sit down and figure things out with patients. It can be tough balancing working weekends and shifts with seeing friends and my partner, but I love the job so you just work it out, it is worth it.
Since graduation Lucy is looking to further her education to gain more skills and possibly become a mentor.
