International Student Essentials to Pack for University

Any amount of baggage allowance seems insufficient when it comes to packing up stuff to settle down in a different country altogether. Student life anywhere is a learning phase and this phase seems to be GIGANTIC if you know you will be thousands of miles away from your home. This is especially true for a person like me. I have lived in a closely knit joint family all along and being alone in a totally different country would be a very new experience for me.

Here is a list of the essentials I packed for University:

1. Enthusiasm

Being an international student I am facing a sea of emotions. I am happy/ nervous/ terrified/ positive, all of that. But I understand, in order to enjoy my student life to the utmost it is absolutely essential I look forward to it enthusiastically.

2. Adulthood

Living all by myself is definitely going to teach me a couple of things. It’s better I finally accept the fact that I am an adult now and learn it the easy way rather than the harsh way.

3. Acceptance

As an international student I have to be ready to accept the cultural difference. Unless I can readily accept the people and culture in the UK I will always feel like an outsider, and that is something none of us would want.

4. Sense and sensibility

I will be living alone and will have to manage every single thing on my own. I cannot any more rely on my parents to do stuff for me just because “I don’t want to do it”. I need to be more sensible.

5. My Mum’s Cooking skills

Unfortunately these were packed at the last moment and hence aren’t complete.

Nothing can be more important than food. Although I can’t cook a delicious meal even close to what my mom cooks but I think a little polishing on these skills and I’ll survive till the time I visit her again.

6. My Dad’s organisational skills

I hope I can be as organised as my father is, just being able to complete all the tasks that I am required to do on time.

7. Perseverance

At times I would feel as if nothing is working in my favour and I might want to give up. At times things might just seem too hard. At times I would need Perseverance.

8. Patience

Living at my house I had pretty much everything at my disposal. But now living in the University’s Halls of Residence I would experience community living for the very first time. It won’t be easy adjusting but the key is to have patience and be polite.

9. Myself

Last but definitely not the least- Myself. It sounds bizarre but going to a totally different place, it is important for any individual to be themselves. I would not want others to control the way I am just because they have a particular opinion I would make sure that I am MYSELF.
