Moving to university is scary business for most. It’s most people’s first time away from home, but after the initial nerves being a fresher is fun. We’ve got five tips on how to enjoy it and make friends who will last a lifetime.

1. Join a society

We’ve got societies galore: sports, films and books… and they’re all free. There’s even a Harry Potter Society. You name it and we’ve probably got it, and if we don’t have the group you’re looking for you can start your own!

It’s safe to say there is no friendship like a society friendship.

2. Get texting

Create a What’sApp housemates’ group before you arrive, and join the Facebook students’ group. It is a great way to get to know people and ease the awkwardness on move-in day.

Have a look to see what everyone is currently talking about!

3. Get out and about around Waterside

We have got a brand-new campus, so get out in it with your new flatmates. We have a steak restaurant, a subway, parks and tennis courts so you can get eating and moving.

Also, our rooftop space is bound to be an ice breaker.

When this is ready, who wouldn’t want to be up here?

4. Spend time in the kitchen

Might seem obvious, but spending time in the communal area will give you the most opportunity to chat, laugh and bond with your new housemates. A pizza can cermet a friendship.

If you’re cooking at the same time, why not cook dinners together?!

5. Always make time for a cuppa

Finally… put the kettle on. Making a cup of tea for someone is that act of kindness that could make all the difference to their day — and could be the start of a new friendship. Aw…

The Platform is now famous in Northampton for an excellent cuppa.
