How to Create an Amazing Fashion Portfolio
If you’re applying to one of our Undergraduate Fashion Degrees, it’s essential in every step of your application that you can successfully express your interest and ability in fashion design.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry; we’ve put together a guide for everything you need to build a Fashion Portfolio:
1. Personal Statement
The first stage of your application involves submitting a personal statement that shows your interest in fashion. We want you to tell us what inspires you. Whether it’s a magazine you read regularly or websites and fashion blogs you visit. Tell us what makes you passionate about fashion!
We would encourage you to not only look at editorial fashion but also contemporary fashion magazines. If you’ve got any other cultural interests such as film, music, travel etc. we definitely urge you to include these in your personal statement too.
2. Your Fashion Portfolio
We’re looking for a portfolio that includes 15–20 images from sketchbooks, drawings, projects and a piece of written work.
Your portfolio should show:
· Where you get your inspiration from
· How you experiment with materials
· How you develop finished pieces from a concept, idea or theme
We will use this to look at your ability as a potential creative designer/maker.
3. The 6 key things we’ll be looking for are:
· Innovative thinking — evidence of thinking outside the box and how you apply that to solving a problem
· Drawing skills demonstrating a range of techniques and styles
· Experimentation of colour, fabric, styling, accessorising
· Idea generation
· Interest in footwear, fashion and product design
· Experimental approach in your 3D work to handling materials in unusual combinations
4. Submitting your Portfolio:
If you’re successful in the first stage of your application, you will be required to attend an interview with a portfolio of your work. If you’re an overseas applicant, you will need to email your online portfolio to our admissions department.
