There comes a time in your life when realisation hits hard and you wish you’d learned from others’ lessons, so as a recent graduate here are my top 5:

  1. Entitlement is an illusion

There are over 7 Billion of us and the gift of life is a pretty big present, so really we still owe the world. In reality there’s a lot of work to be done before we can claim to be entitled to something.

2. Adversity is what you make of it

Embrace adversity. It’s the struggles and challenges that shape our character, they provide a resistance to prove ourselves against. See adversity as a chance to practice ingenuity.

3. You have to give something to get something

Students get a lot of things at a discount and even some things for free. Most of the free stuff isn’t that great, all the things worth having are things we have to work for; high grades, good jobs, skills and experience. Give your time, effort and knowledge, and you’ll get back much more than free pizza.

4. Employability is what you make of it

Just because 95% of our graduates are either in full time employment or further education it does not mean that we will automatically land a dream job, or even a job. If you want a job, do everything you can to make sure they can’t not hire you. If you don’t see a job you want, do everything you can to make that job a reality.

5. Talents are gifts

Gifts are meant to be given, to be shared. The best gifts are personal, come from the heart and have taken time and effort to develop. So put in that extra work, develop your gift into something that is truly worth sharing.

Those are mine, but what are the things you think people need to know? Share them with us on Facebook or Twitter.
